 THE TEXT

1. I started for school very late that morning and was in great dread of a scolding, especially because M. Hamel had said that he would question us on participles, and I did not know the first word about them. For a moment I thought of running away and spending the day out of doors. It was so warm, so bright! The birds were chirping at the edge of the Woods; and in the open field back of the saw mill the Prussian soldier where drilling. It was all much more tempting then the rule of participles, but I had the strength resist, and hurried off to school.

2. When I passed the town hall there was a crowd in front of the bulletin board. For the last two years all our bad news had come from there-The lost battles, the drft, the order of the commanding officer-and I thought to myself-without stopping, "what can be the matter now?"

Then, as I hurried by as fast as I could go, the black Smith, wachter, who was there, with his apprentic, reading the bulletin, called after me,"don't go so fast,bub; you will get to your school in plenty of time!"

जब मैं सभागार के पास से गुजरा तो सूचना पट्ट के सामने भीड़ थी। पिछले 2 वर्ष से हमारे सारे बुरे समाचार यहीं से आए थे-हारे हुए युद्धों के समाचार, सेना में भर्ती के कानूनी आदेश संबंधी समाचार, सेना अधिकारी के आदेशों से संबंधित समाचार-और मैंने बिना रुके अपने मन ही मन में सोचा "अब क्या बात हो सकती है?" फिर जैसे ही मैं अपनी पूरी तेजी के साथ चला, वाक्टर नामक लोहार, जो वहां अपने प्रशिक्षु के साथ समाचार पढ़ रहा था, ने पीछे से पुकार कर मुझे से कहा "इतनी जल्दी मत कर लड़के, स्कूल पहुंचने के लिए तुम्हारे पास ढेर सारा समय है।"

3. I thought he was making fun of me, and reached M.Hamel's little garden all out of breath.

Usually,when school began,there great bustle, which could be heard out in the street, the opening and closing of desk, lessons repeated in unison,very loud, with our hands over our ears to understand better,and the teacher's great ruler rapping on the table 

But now it was all so still! I had counted on the commotion to get to my desk without being seen; but of course, that day everything had to be e as quiet as Sunday morning.Through the window I saw my classmates, already in their places, and M.Hamel walking up and down with his terrible iron ruler under his arm. I had to open the door and go in before everybody. You can imagine how I blushed and how frightened I was.

4. But nothing happened. M.Hamel Saw me and said very kindly, "Go to your place quickly, little Franz. We were beginning without you."

I jumped over the bench and sat down at my desk. Not till then, when I had got a little over my fright, did I see that our teacher had on his beautiful green coat, his frilled shirt, and The Little Black silk cap, all embroidered, that he never or except on inspection and price days. Besides, the whole school seemed so strange and solemn. But the thing that surprised me most was to see, on the back benches that were always empty, the village people sitting quietly like ourselves; old hauser, with his three cornered hat, the farmer Mayor, the farmer postmaster, and several others besides. Everybody looked sad; and hauser had brought an old primer, thumbed at the edges, and he held it open on his knees with his great spectacles lying across the pages.

परंतु कुछ भी ऐसा नहीं हुआ, एम.हेमल ने मुझे देखा और बड़ी दयालुतापूर्वक कहा, " नन्हे फ्रेंज जल्दी से अपनी जगह पर जाओ। हम तुम्हारे बिना ही शुरू करने वाले थे।"

मैं बेंच से कूदकर अपनी डेस्क पर बैठ गया। तब तक मैंने यह नहीं देखा हमारे अध्यापक ने सुंदर हरा कोट, अपनी झालर दार सर्ट और काली छोटी सिल्क की टोपी पहन रखी थी जिस पर कशीदाकारी की गई थी, और जिन्हें हुए निरीक्षण तथा पुरस्कार वितरण के दिनों के अलावा कभी नहीं पहनते थे, इसके अलावा पूरा विद्यालय बहुत ही विचित्र और गंभीर लग रहा था। किंतु जिस चीज ने मुझे सर्वाधिक चकित किया वह यह थी कि सादा खाली रहने वाली पीछे की बेंचो पर गांव के लोग हमारे तरह ही चुपचाप बैठे थे अपना तिकोना टोप पहने बूढ़ा, भूतपूर्व मेयर, भूतपूर्व पोस्ट मास्टर और इनके अलावा कई अन्य। सभी दुखी दिखाई दे रहे थे और बुड्ढ व्यक्ति एक पुरानी बालपोथी लाया था जिसके किनारे अंगूठो से पेज उलटने के कारण गंदे हो रहे थे और उसने इसे अपने घुटनों तक खुला रखा था और उसका बड़ा चश्मा पृष्ठों पर पड़ा था।

5. While I was wondering about it all, M.Hamel mounted his chair, and in the same grave and gentle tone which he had used to me, said , " My children, this is the last lesson I shall give you. The order has come from Berlin to teach only German in the school of of Alsace and Lorrain. The new master comes tomorrow. This is your last French lesson. I want to you to be very attentive.

    What a thunderclap these words were to me!

    Oh, the wretches; that was what they had put up at the town hall! 

My last French lesson! Why, I hardly knew how to write! I should never learn anymore! I must stop there, then! Oh, how sorry I was for not learning my lessons, for seeking birds' eggs, or going sliding on the Saar! My books, that had seemed such a nuisance a while ago, so heavy to carry , my grammar,and my history of the Saints, were old friends now that I couldn't give up. And M.Hamel ,too : the idea that he was going away, that I should never see him again, made me forget all about his ruler and how cranky he was.

ये शब्द मेरे लिए बिजली की कड़कड़ाहट की तरह थे। हाय! अभागे लोग, सभागार पर उन्होंने यही लगा दिया था। फ्रेंच भाषा का मेरा अंतिम पाठ! अरे! मैं मुश्किल से ही लिखना जान पाया था, अब मैं आगे कभी नहीं सीख पाऊंगा। वही और उसी समय मुझे रुक जाना! हाय! मैं अपने पाठ याद ना करके, पक्षियों के अंडे ढूंढने और सार पर फिसलने पर कितना दुखी हो रहा था। मेरी पुस्तक की जो थोड़ी देर पहले ले जाने में भारी और बड़ी समस्या लग रही थी, मेरी व्याकरण और संतों का इतिहास अब पुराने मित्र जैसे लग रही थी जिन्हें मैं त्याग नहीं सकता था और एम. हेमल के बारे में इस विचार ने कि वे जा रहे थे, कि मैं अब उनसे फिर कभी नहीं मिल सकूंगा, मुझे उनके डंडे के बारे में और कितने बदमीजाज थे, इस बारे में सब कुछ भुला दिया।

6.Poor man It  was in honour of this last lesson that he had put on his fine Sunday clothes, and now I understood why the old men of the village were sitting there in the back

of the room. lt was because they were sorry, too, that they had not gone to school more. It was their way of thanking our master for his forty years of faithful service and of showing their respect for the country that was theirs no more.

बेचारा आदमी! इसी अंतिम पाठ के सम्मान में उन्होंने रविवारीय सुंदर कपड़े पहने थे और अब मैं समझ गया कि गांव के बुजुर्ग लोग कमरे में पीछे क्यों बैठे थे। इसलिए कि उन्हें भी दुख था कि वे और ज्यादा स्कूल नहीं गए थे। हमारे अध्यापक की 40 वर्ष की निष्ठा पूर्ण सेवा के लिए धन्यवाद देने और जो देश अब उनका नहीं था उस देश को सम्मान प्रदर्शित करने का यह उनका अपना तरीका था।

While I was thinking of all this. I heard my name called. It was my turn to recite. What would I not have given to be able to say that dreadful rule for the participle all through, very loud and clear, and without one mistake? But I got mixed up on the first words and stood there, holding on to my desk, my heart beating, and not daring to look up.

जब मैं इन्हीं सब बातों के बारे में सोच रहा था तब मैंने अपने नाम को पुकारा जाते हुए सुना। अब बोलने की मेरी बारी थी। बिना किसी गलती के पार्टिसिपल के भयानक नियम को पूरा पूरा जोर जोर से और स्पष्ट सुनाने में समर्थ होने के लिए मैं क्या कुछ नहीं करने को तैयार था? किंतु मैं पहले शब्दों में ही उलझ गया और मेज पकड़ कर खड़ा रह गया, मेरा दिल धड़क रहा था और मुझ में ऊपर की ओर देखने की हिम्मत नहीं थी।

8.I heard M. Hamel say to me, "I

won't scold you, little Franz you must feel bad enough. See how it

is! Every day we have said to ourselves, Bah! l've plenty of time. I'II learn it tomorrow." And now you see where we've come out. Ah, that'S the great trouble with Alsace; she puts off learning till tomorrow. Now those fellows out there will have the right to say to you.’How is it; you pretend to be Frenchmen,and yet you can neither speak nor write your own language?”But you are not the worst,poor little Franz. We've all a great deal to reproach ourselves with.

" Your parents were not anxious enough to have you learn. They preferred to put you to work on a farm or at the mills, so as to have a little more money, And I? I've been to blame also. Have I not often sent you to water my flowers instead of learning yom lessons? And when I wanted to go fishing , did I not just give you a holiday?”

हिंदी अनुवाद

मैंने एम हेमल को मुझसे कहते हुए सुना-मैं तुम्हें डांट लूंगा नहीं, फ्रेंज, तुम्हें आवाज से ही काफी बुरा महसूस हो रहा होगा। देखो ऐसा है। प्रतिदिन हमने स्वयं से कहा है "अरे! मेरे पास काफी समय है। मैं इसे कल सीख लूंगा और अब तुम देख रहे हो कि हम कहां गए हैं। हाय अल्सास के साथी यही बड़ी परेशानी है, वह सीखने को कल के लिए टाल देती है। अब बाहर के लोगों के पास आपसे कहने का अधिकार होगा, ऐसा कैसे हैं, तुम फ्रांसीसी होने का नाटक भी करते होऔर फिर तुम ना तो अपनी भाषा लिख सकते और ना ही बोल सकते हो?" किंतु नन्हे फ्रेंज, तुम ही सबसे बुरे नहीं हो। हम सब के पास स्वयं को दोष देने के पर्याप्त कारण हैं।

"तुम्हारे माता पिता तुम्हे शिक्षा दिलवाने के प्रति पर्याप्त उत्सुक नहीं थे। वेद तुम्हें किसी फार्म या आरा मशीन पर काम पर लगाना ज्यादा पसंद करते थे ताकि थोड़ा सा अधिक धन मिल सके और मैं? मैं भी दोषी हूं। क्या मैंने तुम्हें पाठ सिखाने के बजाय अक्सर अपने फूलों में पानी देने के लिए नहीं भेजा है और जब मैं मछली पकड़ने जाना चाहता था तू क्या मैंने तुम्हारी छुट्टी नहीं की?"

9.Then, from one thing to another, M.Haimel went on to talk of the French language, saying that it was the most beautiful language in the world- the clearest, the most logical, that we must guard it among us and never forget it, because when a people are enslaved, as long as they hold fast to their language it is as if they had the key to their prison.Then he opeopened a grammar and read us our lesson. I amazed to see how well I understood it. All he said seemed so easy , so easy! I think, too, that I never listened so carefully, and that he had never explained everything with so much patience. It seemed almost as if the poor man wanted to us all he knew before going away, and to put it all into our heads at one stroke

फिर एक के बाद दूसरी बात करते हुए एम हेमल फ्रांसीसी भाषा के बारे में बात करते रहे, यह कहते हुए कि यह संसार की सबसे सुंदर भाषा है - सर्वाधिक स्पष्ट , सर्वाधिक तर्कसंगत, और यह कि इसे हमें अपने बीच सुरक्षित रखना है और उसे कभी नहीं भूलना है क्योंकि जब किसी देश के लोग गुलाम होते हैं तो जब तक हुए अपनी भाषा से मजबूती से बंधे रहते हैं तो यह ऐसा ही है मानो उनकी जेल की चाबी उनके पास है। फिर उन्होंने व्याकरण की एक किताब खोली और हमारा पास्ट हमें पढ़कर सुनाया। मैं यह देखकर चकित था कि मुझे यह कितनी अच्छी तरह समझ आ रहा था। उन्होंने जो कुछ कहा वह बहुत बहुत सरल लगा! मैं यही सोचता हूं कि मैंने कभी इतने ध्यान से नहीं सुना था, और उन्होंने हर चीज को धैर्य पूर्वक कभी इतना अधिक स्पष्ट नहीं किया था। ऐसा लग रहा था कि बिचारा जाने से पहले वह जो कुछ जानता था उस सबको हमें दे देना चाहता था और इस सारी जानकारी को एक ही बार में हमारे दिमाग में डाल देना चाहता था।

About the poet

Kamala Das ( 1934 ) was born in Malabar, Kerala. She is recognised as one of India's foremost poets. Har works are known for their originality, versatility and the indigenous flavour of the soul.

Kamala Das has published many novels and short stories in English and Malayalam the name 'Madhavi Kutty'. Some of her works in English include the novel alphabet of lust( 1977 ) , a collection of short stories padmavati the Harlot and other stories (1992), in addition to five books of poetry. She is a sensitive writer who capture the complex subtleties of human relationship in lyrical idiom, My Mother at Sixty-six is an example

पिछले शुक्रवार की सुबह को अपने मां बाप के घर से कोचीन को वाहन चलाकर जाते हुए, मैंने अपनी मां को देखा, मेरे साथ बैठी, ऊंघते हुए, खुले हुए मुंह के साथ, उनका चेहरा लाश के समान पीला दिखाई दिया।

Pain and realised with

That she was as old age she

looked but soon

और कष्ट के साथ एहसास किया कि वह जितनी दिखती थी उतनी ही बुड्ढी हो गई थी परंतु शीघ्र ही उस विचार को मन से दूर कर दिया।
